Prior to creating his tax practice, Tim honorably served in our military. He served two tours in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. After the military, he took positions with United Airlines and then Eastman Kodak. Tim graduated from San Jose State University in 1971, receiving a bachelor degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in tax.
In 1972, shortly after graduating, Tim ambitiously founded Timothy J’ O’Brien Tax & Accounting and began his accredited career as a tax preparer. He had no office when he started, and rather drove door to door making house calls to all of his clients. By 1975, Tim had obtained his master’s degree in taxation from Golden Gate University and his practice continued to flourish.
In August of 1990, Tim acquired Dell Harris tax practice. The acquisition left Tim with nearly 1,000 clients and one of the largest, privately run tax practices in the bay area. In 2004, Tim sold his practice to his nephews, allowing Tim to have a more flexible schedule and continue to work in the industry he loves. He continues to serve as a Senior Tax Preparer and Advisor, with over 40 years of experience in tax practice management, preparation and law.
Brian SoaresExecutive, Senior Tax Specialist, CRTP
Brian is the CEO and co-founder of TJO & Associates, Inc. He began his professional career with Timothy J. O’Brien Tax & Accounting as an intern assisting with various day-to-day activities. He was fascinated with tax law and was determined to learn more about the field while studying at San Jose State University. In 2001, while at SJSU, he co-founded Capitol Tax & Accounting (CTA) with Nelson Mendonca. And in 2004, CTA acquired Timothy J. O’Brien Tax & Accounting and TJO & Associates, Inc. was formed. Brian has been preparing tax returns for over 10 years and currently prepares over 500 tax returns each tax season. When he is not meeting with clients, Brian enjoys traveling and studying U.S. history.
Nelson MendoncaExecutive, Senior Tax Specialist, CRTP
Nelson Mendonca is a founder and partner with TJO & Associates Inc. specializing in providing tax preparation, tax advisory, accounting, review, and audit services to individuals and various businesses entities throughout California and other states for the past 8 years. In addition to these commitments, other primary areas of expertise include Sarbanes Oxley compliance for small to medium size public companies, internal control documentation, and company risk assessment analysis. Prior to becoming partner at TJO & Associates, Nelson Mendonca was one of the founders and worked for Capital Tax & Accounting in 2002. The company grew rapidly and acquired Timothy J. O’Brien Tax & Accounting in 2004, creating TJO & Associates. Additional work history prior to 2002 includes 7 years of various accounting and management related roles for public companies such as Hewlett Packard, PLX Technology, Zomax, and Citibank.
Eric SoaresOffice Manager, Tax Specialist, CRTP, BSc
Eric Soares is a Tax Specialist and Office Manager at TJO & Associates, Inc. He began working with the firm in 2002 as an intern, handling various day-to-day activities. In 2005, Eric was promoted to Office Manager. In addition to managing the office, he is responsible for handling the e-file process for the entire firm. As his interest in tax law began to grow, he started to study for his license to prepare individual tax returns. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing from San Jose State University in 2009 and began meeting with clients and preparing tax returns shortly thereafter. During his free time, Eric likes to make music, exercise, and spend time with loved ones.
